Bret Smith: Final Project Process Blog

Day 1
On the first day of constructing my project I was hoping to get more accomplished than I actually did. I spent two hours using the table saw to cut the plywood into the pieces I wanted. I could have accomplished this much faster, but I kept second guessing my measurements trying to make sure that I had everything right. Despite that, at the end of the day I was able to rip all of the pieces to the appropriate lengths that I needed. The pictures included show the back of the shelf, the sides, the top and bottom, and the shelves themselves.

Day 2
On the second day I was hoping to finish my project. I was planning on edge banding, and then fastening all the pieces together. However, the edge banding process took longer than I expected. It was kind of frustrating because after I edge banded some pieces I realized that I did not put them on straight. So I had to reheat the edge banded pieces so I could remove it from the plywood, then I had to re-edge band them back into place. This happened more than once, and it made the overall process much longer than it needed to be. Similar to the first day I ended up wasting a lot of time by making silly mistakes. However, by the end of the day I was able to finish all of the edge banding.

Day 3
After spending the entire second day of building my project I was much more productive on day 3. I was now ready to begin fastening my pieces together. I initially was planning on using staples to put the pieces together, but after discussing it with Tim he recommended using pocket screws. This way the screws would be going in at an angle and it would be less obvious. So the third day was spent drilling the holes into the plywood where I would insert the screws and then attaching the shelves to the back of the bookshelf. However I was a bit premature when I first attached the shelves, because afterwards I realized that I needed to drill more holes into the pieces of plywood. So I had to take out the screws from the shelves so I could drill more holes. This was a little frustrating because it meant that I would have to do the process all over again. However, I was able to drill in all the holes I needed and reattach the shelves by the end of the day. It was pretty cool at the end because the bookshelf was really beginning to take shape, and there was not that much more that I needed to do.

Day 4
On this last day there was not that a whole lot left that I needed to do. All I had left to do was attach the sides of the bookshelf to the shelves themselves and the back. After that I screwed in the sides to the bookshelf. It was pretty cool because the bookshelf ended up looking better than I expected. I had pretty low expectations for how I would do with this project, but I believe it ended up looking pretty decent. However, at the end I realized that the sides of the bookshelf were slightly different lengths so it created somewhat of an aesthetic problem. Despite that I believed the bookshelf looked pretty nice. While the overall process took longer than I expected it was still enjoyable
